Highway 64 where a red wolf died
Highway 64 where a red wolf died

Highway 64 in eastern North Carolina has become a perilous zone for the critically endangered red wolf. In recent years, a string of tragic vehicle collisions has claimed the lives of several individuals, including a two-year-old male and, most devastatingly, the father of a litter of five pups. This loss not only diminishes the already small wild population but also threatens the long-term survival of the species. These incidents highlight the urgent need for effective mitigation strategies, such as wildlife crossings, enhanced road signage, and reduced vehicle speeds, to protect these vulnerable animals and ensure their continued existence in the wild but Wildlife crossings on Highway 64 hold immense promise for the survival of the critically endangered red wolf. These structures, such as underpasses and overpasses, provide safe passage for animals to move across the highway without the risk of vehicle collisions. By reducing road mortality, wildlife crossings directly address one of the most significant threats to the red wolf population.
